Japan and NASA team up for SuperConcorde
Japan’s space agency JAXA has confirmed it will start full-scale development of a passenger plane based on scramjet technology. The Japanese are courting NASA’s collaboration on the project, which could bear some hypersonic fruit by 2025. The two agencies will meet this June to discuss how to build the heir to Concorde, Japanese business sheet Nihon Keizai reports. R&D on the sound barrier-busting craft will weigh in at “several hundred” billion Yen, according to the Nikkei. JAXA spokesman Kiyotaka Yashiro confirmed: “In the future, we think we need some kind of cooperation with NASA.”

Microsoft preps critical Windows, Exchange patches
Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday plans to release three patches for several of its software products, including at least two critical updates for known vulnerabilities, according to the company’s monthly security update. Microsoft plans to release one critical patch for its Microsoft Exchange messaging server and two patches, at least one of which is critical, for Windows. All the updates may require a restart and will be detectable using Microsoft’s Baseline Security Analyzer tool. The Windows patches also can be detected through Microsoft’s Enterprise Scanning Tool, the company said.

IBM accused of hacking lawyers’, clients’ email
A remarkable case has started against IBM in Washington DC with a law firm accusing Big Blue and an unknown employee of hacking into it and its clients’ email. Butera & Andrews is a law firm based in DC, and the case is being brought under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Stored Communications Act and the Electronic Communication Privacy Act. The firm said in its allegation that an employee suspected last October or November that the email server, contracted out to Virginian firm Sierra Corporation, had been compromised.

A Microsoft, Yahoo Tie-Up?
One faction within Microsoft Corp. is promoting a bold strategy in the company’s battle with Google Inc: Join forces with Yahoo Inc. That would be a major departure for Microsoft, the software maker that is legendary for toiling on its own until it captures a new market. However, people familiar with the situation say that Microsoft has considered the idea of acquiring a stake in Yahoo, and that the two companies have discussed possible options over the course of the past year.

Malaysia warns of jail for text-messaging behind the wheel
Malaysian motorists who read or send SMS text messages while behind the wheel face going to jail, authorities warned in a report Wednesday, saying texting is more dangerous than talking on the phone. Malaysia’s Road Transport Department last year nabbed 600 motorists for using text messaging services and is setting its sights on catching more, according to the New Straits Times. “Using the SMS while driving is more dangerous than talking on the handphone. You would have to concentrate on the message being sent. How can you keep your eyes on the road while doing this?” the department’s enforcement director Solah Mat Hassan was quoted as saying.

US plans anti-satellite lasers
A controversial effort by the US Pentagon to develop ground-based anti-satellite lasers has been highlighted by Congressional hearings held this week. Unclassified Air Force budget documents discussed during the hearing propose funding for an ongoing project called Advanced Optics and Laser Space Tech. The major long-term goal of the project is to “perform atmospheric compensation/beam control experiments for applications including anti-satellite weapons”.

Opera Software Launches Opera Mini 2.0
Opera Software today announced a new version of its micro-browser for non-smartphones, Opera Mini 2.0. The new version of Opera Mini builds on the previous version’s success as a downloadable Java application that brings the full web browsing experience to 2.5G and 3G non-smartphones, by reformatting the page to make it accessible to devices with small screens. New features in Opera Mini 2.0 included content download to the phone, the ability to change the browser’s visual skin, multisearch to allow users to select extra search engines for the homepage, speed dial for bookmarks similar to the phones speed dial, and quick horizontal and vertical panning when browsing backwards or forwards.

Intel: 90% of Cores to be Duo by year end
Intel will begin producing more dual-core chips than single-core parts this quarter, the chip giant has revealed. Indeed, by the end of 2006, 90 per cent of the mobile CPUs it produces will be dual-core chips, rather more than the company previously forecast. In the past, Intel has said it will go into 2007 with “over 70 per cent” of its mobile processor production taken up by dual-core offerings - primarily the current, ‘Yonah’ Core Duos, but also some next-generation ‘Merom’ parts too. But with the accelerated Merom release schedule announced last week - the chip will debut this coming August instead of some time in Q4 - Intel hopes its single-core to dual-core transition will gain a significant boost.

Sharp increase in Mac OS X flaws
Just because you use a Macintosh, don’t think you’re any more secure than a Wintel user. A sharp increase in the number of flaws being discovered in Mac OS X suggests that the Apple operating system may soon be every bit as prone to malicious attacks as Windows systems, according to a report from the SANS Institute, a Bethesda, Md.-based security training and research firm. Mac OS X still remains safer than Windows because its relatively small installed base is a less attractive target for malicious hackers than Windows systems. But the number of flaws being discovered in the operating system is leaving its reputation as a secure alternative to Windows “in tatters,” according to the semiannual update to the SANS Top 20 list of Internet vulnerabilities.

Internet could induce self-destructive behaviour
A new study has revealed that spending a lot of time on the Internet can induce self-destructive behaviour among young people. Researchers at Cornell University, headed by Janis L Whitlock, examined normal behaviour in chat rooms and the use of message boards by adolescents. They observed 406 message boards to investigate how adolescents solicit and share information related to self-injurious behaviour. Females 14-20 years of age visited these bulletin boards the most, reported science portal EurekAlert.

What hackers can do over P2P?
Security watchers are warning of a new worm that’s propagating over instant messenger networks run by both AOL and MSN. Nugache-A is also spreading (albeit modestly) as an infected email that uses a variety of well-known Windows exploits to infect vulnerable Windows PCs. If successful, the worm opens a back door that leaves compromised PCs as zombies under the control of hackers. The command and control channel technique used by the worm is unusual. Instead of a static list, the worm connects to infected peers, web security firm Websense reports. The SANS Institute’s Internet Storm Centre (ISC) adds that the bots talk to each other via port 8/TCP over an encrypted P2P channel.

Microsoft to support 1394b standard
Microsoft Corp. will provide support for the IEEE1394b standard “within a reasonable time” after the launch of Windows Vista, according to a Microsoft Corp. representative who attended the IEEE1394 Trade Association meeting held here last week. The Widows Vista is the software giant’s flagship operating system, whose broad launch is expected in January, 2007. Microsoft, which already supports IEEE1394a in Windows XP, will extend its support to the 800Mbit/s transfer rates in the IEEE1394b standard.
